Ystrad Mynach Town Centre was brimming with creativity this year as local businesses went head-to-head in CCBC’s annual town centre Christmas Window Dressing Competition!

For the second consecutive year, Veg of Evans have been crowned the competition winner of the Ystrad Mynach competition, delighting judges with their imaginative and festive display. Their windows featured an array of whimsical decorations and characters, including a miniature train track, climbing Santas, characters and artwork from The Snowman and the Snowdog, and cheerful elves on their best behaviour! The time and effort invested in the display was evident, and CCBC extends its thanks to Veg of Evans for creating yet another spectacular showcase.

Veg of Evans is a family-run business located at 16 Penallta Road, Ystrad Mynach, and has been serving the community for over 10 years. Run by Susanne and Simon Evans, along with delivery driver Huw Evans, the shop offers fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, bakery bread, farm eggs, and a range of jams, marmalades, and chutneys. They also provide free local delivery and supply local restaurants, cafés, pubs, and schools.

On receiving the award, Susanne said:

“We are over the moon to have won the competition again for the second year in a row! We really appreciate all the comments and support about the window from customers.”

The standard of entries was once again very high across the whole of the town centre, making it an incredibly challenging afternoon for the judges. Hot on the heels of the reigning champions were Andrew Berry Jewellery, who, in a very tightly-fought race for the title, achieved a thoroughly deserved Highly Commended award. Judges were extremely impressed with the stylish use of lighting, exquisite attention to detail and the moving cable-cars with hot air-balloon, all set against a wintry Alpine landscape.

Andrew Berry Jewellery is run by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Louise Berry. Established in 1987, and located at 30 Bedwlwyn Road, the business offers a wide selection of jewellery brands including Clogau, Laura Ashley, Hot Diamonds and Uno de 50, as well as vintage jewellery and their own exclusive designs. They are certified diamond specialists, offering a selection of fine diamond jewellery. They also operate an on-site workshop, where bespoke pieces and wedding rings are crafted to perfection—a true speciality of theirs – as well as offering jewellery repairs, restorations and remodels.

They have come a long way since Christmas 1987, when a young Andrew, fresh out of university, opened the shop with just two cabinets of jewellery and a solitary Christmas tree adorning the window.

On being presented with their award, Louise and Andrew said:

“We are thrilled to be highly commended for our Christmas window this year – dressing a shop window is a bit like putting on a tiny stage show. This year we wanted to stop people in their tracks, make people smile and maybe even spark a memory – many customers have said seeing the moving features took them back to their childhood which was so wonderful to hear. Coming up with a new idea each year takes a lot of effort, so to be recognised by the judges is something we’re very proud of.”

Also highly commended for her efforts was Katharine Griffiths, owner of The Wedding House at 28a Bedwlwyn Road, whose elegant and colour-coordinated display featured a velveteen rocking horse and an array of Christmas décor.

Congratulations to Veg of Evans, Andrew Berry Jewellers and The Wedding House, together with all participating businesses across the town centre, for bringing festive cheer and creativity to Ystrad Mynach this Christmas!
