The eyes of the cycling world will turn to the Caerphilly county borough in one year’s time, when the Tour de France comes to Wales.
Excitement is building ahead of the largest free sporting spectacle in British history.
Wales will play a central role in the 2027 Tour de France, with stage three of the men’s race starting in Welshpool in Powys and finishing in Cardiff on Sunday 4 July 2027, passing through some of the region’s most scenic and challenging climbs, including the Côte de Rhigos and Côte de Caerffili in the final kilometres.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Leader of Caerphilly Council said, “We are absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to welcome this global sporting event to the county borough next summer. We look forward to welcoming elite competitors from across the globe, who will be racing through our towns and villages before tackling the iconic climb up Caerphilly Mountain.”
“We are determined to ensure such a major sporting event will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the Caerphilly county borough. We also want to give residents and businesses plenty of notice about the need for extensive road closures on the day, so everyone needs to plan ahead ready for the big event.”
Welsh Government Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport Heledd Fychan added, “We can’t wait to welcome the Tour de France in 2027 to Wales. It will be an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the great cycling routes we have here to the whole world. It will benefit sport, tourism and the wider economy, and we must maximise that.
“We have a proud cycling heritage and a passionate fanbase, so we are thrilled to play our part in the Grand Départ GB celebrations this summer. I’d encourage everyone who can to get involved, and make the most of this once-in–a-generation opportunity.”
